When should we worry about per-rectal bleeding? In this webinar organised by Lavender Medicare (English and Bahasa), Dr Sim Hsien Lin, Consultant General Surgeon (Colorectal Surgery) covers the topic of rectal bleeding as well as the importance of screening for colorectal cancer.

Bleeding in the rectum can be a symptom for several diseases in the lower digestive tract, such as hemorrhoids, chronic constipation, hard stools, and sores in the anus. Anal cancer, Crohn’s disease (chronic inflammation of the bowel wall), diarrhea, colon cancer, rectal inflammation, and colon polyps, can also cause blood to pass through the anus.

Lianhe ZaoBao 联合早报 Feature: Vacuum-Assisted Breast Biopsy

In this Lianhe ZaoBao 联合早报 article, Dr. Tan Chuan Chien, SOG Consultant General Surgeon (Breast & Thyroid Surgery) talks about the benefits and risks of employing the vacuum-assisted breast biopsy technique as part of his investigations:

“Doctors sometimes recommend biopsies when there is an area of abnormality seen on breast scans. Vacuum-assisted breast biopsy allows sampling of larger amounts of tissue compared to other percutaneous biopsy techniques hence improves the accuracy. Some risks associated with this procedure include slight discomfort during the procedure, some bruising or bleeding at the breast after it.”

“在乳房扫描中发现有异常部位时，医生有时会建议进行活检。与其他经皮穿刺活检技术相比，使用真空辅助乳腺活检的好处是，可以取得大量组织做化验样本，因此提高了化验的准确性。其风险是，患者在手术过程中可能会感到不适，并且在手术后乳房会有瘀伤或出血。”
